<Exciting Features of iOS 17: What to Expect from Apple>

Written on

Recently, it was suggested that iOS 17 would be a minor update, mainly aimed at fixing bugs and enhancing stability. This was attributed to Apple's shift in focus towards its upcoming AR/VR headset set to launch later this year. However, fresh leaks from credible sources indicate a much larger update than initially expected.

While it may not be as extensive as iOS 16, which boasted over 255 features, iOS 17 is shaping up to be a significant release.

#1. A Revolutionary Journaling Application

For those who enjoy journaling, especially users of apps like Day One, the news about iOS 17's native journaling app, codenamed "Jurassic," is thrilling. This app is designed to help users document their daily lives effectively.

The standout feature? It will analyze your entries to identify patterns and highlight any unusual occurrences, such as special days. Rest assured, all analysis takes place on your device, keeping your private thoughts secure.

As Apple's proprietary application, it will have access to your Call History and Messages, provided you grant permission, allowing for a more personalized experience. Thus, you may find yourself bidding farewell to third-party journaling apps.

This app will come pre-installed on all iPhones that upgrade to iOS 17, following the precedent set by Freeform in iOS 16.2.

As someone currently managing journals in a locked Note, I find the prospects of "Jurassic" incredibly exciting. What about you?

#2. Groundbreaking Health Enhancements

Apple has made significant strides in physical health by allowing users to track various metrics such as activity, cycles, heart health, and sleep. With iOS 17, the focus is set to expand into mental health.

1. AI-Driven Health Coaching

Codenamed "Quartz," this service utilizes AI and data from your Apple Watch to create personalized programs aimed at:

  • Motivating you to stay active,
  • Enhancing your dietary habits,
  • Improving your sleep quality.

How impressive is that?

2. Mood and Emotion Tracking

This standalone feature, which will be integrated into the Health app, will allow users to log their mood throughout the day by answering simple questions. Over time, you can compare your mood trends.

While this initial version may seem basic, there are plans to implement algorithms capable of analyzing your mood based on speech, typed words, and data from other devices in future updates.

3. Health App on iPadOS

Apple intends to introduce the Health app to iPadOS 17, enabling users to view their ECG and other health data on a larger display.

#3. New App Store Possibilities

A notable rumor suggests that iOS 17 may permit "side-loading," allowing users to install applications from sources outside the official App Store. This move is influenced by new EU regulations.

While this feature has been available on macOS for some time, it raises concerns regarding app security and compliance with Apple's guidelines. Users should exercise caution and only side-load apps from trustworthy sources.

#4. Linking Apple Watch to Multiple Devices

Historically, the Apple Watch could only pair with one iPhone at a time. However, iOS 17 and watchOS 10 might finally allow for multiple device connections, including Macs and iPads.

It remains uncertain if users will still need an iPhone for initial setup, but this update would greatly benefit those of us with multiple iPhones.

#5. Customizable App Library

Introduced in iOS 14, the App Library has been relatively rigid, not allowing for custom categories or renaming. However, rumors suggest that iOS 17 will finally enable these customizations.

#6. Sharing Lock Screens

iOS 16 introduced Lock Screen customizations, but sharing those designs with friends was not straightforward. iOS 17 may simplify this process, enabling users to easily share their Lock Screen setups, similar to sharing Apple Watch faces.

Bonus

Expect additional font options for time displays and new Emoji wallpaper styles.

#7. Custom Accessibility Mode

Thanks to 9to5Mac for uncovering the 'Custom Accessibility Mode' in the code for iOS 16.2. This feature allows users to restrict their devices to a limited set of apps and functionalities, potentially for better battery conservation or parental controls.

Although first discovered in earlier updates, this feature is expected to debut with iOS 17.

#8. Changes to Control Center UI

After remaining unchanged since iOS 11, the Control Center interface is set for a refresh.

#9. Enhancements to Apple Music

  • Users might soon see song lyrics directly on the Lock Screen, possibly through a Live Activity feature.
  • Text within the app may be minimized to prioritize new images and graphics.

#10. Improved Flashlight Brightness Control

Currently, adjusting flashlight brightness is limited to five steps. iOS 17 may introduce a step-less adjustment feature, similar to screen brightness, allowing for finer control.

# Compatible Devices

iOS 17 is expected to be compatible with all devices starting from the iPhone XR.

While the iPhone 8, 8+, and X may not receive the update, any device that does will ensure compatibility across the board. My prediction is that all compatible devices will receive iOS 17, as no features have emerged that necessitate advanced hardware.
