Optimize Your iPhone’s System Cache in Just One Minute
Written on
When examining the storage details of your iPhone, you may notice a light grey bar labeled ‘System Data’ (previously known as ‘Others’). If you scroll down, you can see how much storage this data occupies:
The amount may surprise you:
So, what exactly is this data?
System data comprises essential information that Apple keeps stored in a designated area on your device. It enhances your iOS experience by collecting personalized information and cached data, which helps reduce load times when revisiting apps or websites. However, given the numerous websites you visit daily, it’s likely that many of these cached items are unnecessary.
Additionally, Apple also saves its own data on your device, which can accumulate into several gigabytes of unneeded information, ultimately leading to the frustrating ‘Storage Full!’ warning.
What Does System Data Include?
System Data encompasses a variety of elements, such as:
- Browser cache
- Mail cache and attachments
- App cache
- Error logs
- Siri voice data
- Learnings from Siri
While it’s impossible to completely eliminate this data without risking your iPhone's functionality, there are methods to minimize its size.
1. Quick Reboot to Free Up Space
I’ve shared several tips on clearing your iPhone’s RAM in another article:

However, let me highlight the most effective method I’ve discovered:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the screen turns off.
Your iPhone will reboot, and you can check how much your System Data has reduced. Mine decreased by 800 MB! How much did yours drop?
2. Clear Safari's Cache
Safari is a fantastic browser known for its speed and privacy features. However, it accumulates a large amount of backend data based on your browsing habits. Clearing this data periodically is advised to conserve storage space.
Here’s How:
Navigate to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Note that this will also erase your browsing history.
Additional Tips:
- Set the option to remove download items after a day or once they’ve been successfully downloaded. This only clears the list, not the actual files.
- Close inactive tabs after a day, week, or month.
These minor adjustments can yield significant benefits over time.

3. Optimize Storage Settings
Apple configures iPhone settings to maximize functionality, which may result in excessive storage consumption over time:
- iCloud Photos are saved in their original quality.
- Messages are retained indefinitely.
- Deleted voice memos remain stored forever.
While this is convenient, it can quickly fill up storage. Here’s how to optimize:
For Photos:
Go to Settings > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage. This saves full-quality photos in iCloud while keeping slightly lower-quality versions on your device.
For Messages:
Navigate to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and adjust the setting to 30 days or 1 year. This will delete older messages and create space for new ones.
For Voice Memos:
Visit Settings > Voice Memos > Clear Deleted and change the setting from Never to a time frame of your choice.
4. Use App Offloading
Apple offers a feature called app offloading, which removes the app while preserving its data. When you reinstall the app, it will function as if it had never been deleted.
Here’s How to Offload:
- Automatically: Go to Settings > App Store > Turn on 'Offload Unused Apps'. This setting will automatically offload apps that have not been used for a while.
- Manually: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If there’s an app you won’t need soon, tap on it and select Offload App.
5. Monitor Streaming Apps
Streaming applications like Netflix, Prime Video, Instagram, and Spotify can accumulate large amounts of cache data, especially after binge-watching. To keep your storage in check, consider deleting and reinstalling these apps after finishing a series.
Alternatively, Clear Cache Directly:
Some apps allow you to clear cache directly within their settings. For example, for Spotify, navigate to Settings > Storage > Clear Cache.
If All Else Fails…
If you have tried everything and still face storage issues:
6. Update Your Software
There have been instances where iOS and iPadOS versions had glitches that prevented proper optimization of system data. Regular updates ensure your device runs smoothly. Always install the latest updates as soon as they are available.
7. Backup and Reset as a Last Resort
Corrupted files and bugs can significantly contribute to storage problems. If other solutions fail, consider backing up your data, erasing your iPhone, and restoring it.
Backup Options:
- iCloud Backup: Go to Settings > (Your Name) > iCloud > Turn on iCloud Backup. Ensure you have enough iCloud storage space.
- iTunes/Finder Backup: Connect your iPhone to your computer and back it up via iTunes or Finder.
To erase your device, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Afterward, restore your backup.
Conclusion
By following these steps, you can effectively reduce the unnecessary System Data cluttering your iPhone. It would be beneficial for Apple to introduce tools that help analyze and clear unnecessary files more easily.
